Chapter Index

“What about Chase? Could you give him some painkillers? I heard there are painkillers and things like that.”

“Oh, that’s for use on mothers.”

The doctor glanced down at Chase, looking embarrassed. Then he motioned to another staff member to help him into the wheelchair.

But Chase, who waved his hand and refused, quickly got up from the bed with difficulty and stood next to me. His cheeks were still as pale as a sheet of paper, but his expression had become much calmer.

“It’s okay. It’s bearable, so let’s go quickly. It’s not good to waste time.”

“You can get in a wheelchair, Chase.”

“Okay, I’ll just stay by Leo’s side.”

Chase grabbed my hand and urged the doctor to hurry up and go. When the doctor nodded, the staff started to walk while pushing the bed. When we arrived at the delivery room, cold sweat was pouring down from Chase’s forehead like rain.

    “It hurts a lot.”

I had experienced it briefly, so I could guess how painful it would be. No, now that it was really starting, it was definitely going to be much harder than it had been earlier.

But Chase just looked down at me and tightened his grip on my hand. A splendid fragrance spread softly, almost as if it were visible before my eyes. My whole body grew warm and I felt warm in an instant.

“It’s better than what you’re doing. You’re so small and weak.”

    “It’s not that small…”

Chase, who had been teasing me with a kind and yet not so affectionate gaze, closed his long eyes. His eyes, which curved elegantly, were as pretty as crescent moons that appeared during the day. The plump aegyo-sal under his eyes slightly folded. My reflection looking at him was reflected in his softly shining black eyes.

His red, plump lips opened slightly and formed a soft smile. A playful dimple appeared above the corners of his lips, which were turned up halfway.

Chase bowed his head toward me. His breath, like the scent of spring flowers, whispered in my ear.

    “So don’t get sick, puppy.”

If I get sick, that’s fine…… Those words continued vaguely and then dispersed into the air.

“Excuse me, I’m sorry for interrupting you in the middle of such a passionate moment.”

I was startled by Mr. Jeffrey’s hand tapping my shoulder, and I fell away from Chase. Chase turned around with a frown on his face.

    “It’s not that sad!”

“Yeah, it’s not sad at all. But that’s not the problem right now.”

    “Why, what’s wrong?”

Chase’s expression hardened at the doctor’s serious attitude. I also became nervous and swallowed hard.

Mr. Jeffrey opened his mouth with a pale face.

    “Leoruka, I think we’ll have to have a C-section. The baby is too… big for Leoruka’s body…”

    “yes?”

I often heard that the baby was large for its age, considering it was a black panther. But I thought it wouldn’t be that big since the contractions came three weeks earlier than the due date. I asked, a little flustered.

“Didn’t you say it was just right the last time you had an ultrasound?”

“It was like that back then, but the child is growing up differently every day. Who does he take after?”

The way he glanced at Chase was unusual. Then, Chase opened his eyes toward the doctor even though he was dying from labor pains.

“Yeontan looks like Leo. What are you talking about out of the blue?”

    “No, that’s not what I meant…”

“It has the body of a black panther, but its facial features are exactly like Leo’s. Why do you do that when you know that too?”

What are you talking about out of the blue in the middle of all this, you black panther! While I was speechless and just smiled. Chase kept asking the doctor questions with a bloodless face. But most of it was nonsense. Are you doing this because you’re in so much pain…?

The doctor, who had not heard any of this, responded in astonishment.

“Who said the baby looks like Leoruka?”

“My brother showed me the ultrasound. The eyes are so big that they’re half the size of the face.”

“I saw that when my eyes were still fully developed.”

“The nose was also high. Have you ever seen an unborn baby’s nose that high?”

“Who would look at a baby’s nose like that before it’s even born…”

It didn’t seem like the time for that, but Chase and Mr. Jeffrey were both insisting that they would win without giving a single word. To be exact, Chase was the only one insisting, and the doctor was just relaying the message.

But in the end, as always, the doctor lost. The one who is loud and cries the most always wins.

“Okay… You’re right. So, can I go for surgery now?”

The surgery hadn’t even started yet, but the doctor already looked tattered. Chase looked exhausted from enduring the pain and crying, and I, the one who had to deliver the baby, was the only one with a cheerful face as we headed to the operating room together.

“Excuse me, where are you following me to?”

Of course, Chase shouldn’t have done that. I don’t know about the delivery room, but in the operating room, a guardian is not allowed to be present. Chase must have known that, but he tried to sneak in among the staff and follow them, but the doctor grabbed him by the back of the neck and scolded him.

“I heard that there are hospitals that allow guardians to observe.”

Chase grumbled, his voice cracking from the pain. Why shouldn’t he just lie in his hospital bed and why should he be following me around like a kitten looking for its owner when he’s in such pain?

“Our hospital doesn’t. I’ve explained this 100 times before. There aren’t many other hospitals that offer guardian observation services yet. So please hurry up and go back to your room and wait, guardian.”

“How can I send the puppy alone?”

“Then you will give birth to the baby instead?”

    “Could that be…?”

    “Will it work?”

It seemed that Chase was in so much pain that he wasn’t in his right mind. Even now, his lips were swollen and he was dripping with cold sweat, holding onto the doctor and talking nonsense. It would be better if I just got the surgery quickly so that Chase wouldn’t be in so much pain.
